Planning your trip

Contents List | Introduction | Planning your trip | Using this guide | Route options | Sample Timetables

If you could afford the time and the money the ideal would be to spend several months covering the routes in this guide, travelling the entire Mediterranean: there is so much to see, so many places to visit. More realistic for most travellers will be several shorter visits. Highlights and some suggested routes are listed at the start of each section.

One way to extend your time in the Med is to get a job there. There are many opportunities for casual work in the summer. Options include working in hotels, restaurants and bars as well as crewing on yachts. Crewing (see box, p17) is particularly feasible in the Aegean (though seldom between Greece and Turkey) and between France, Corsica and Sardinia, where the sheer volume of boats in summer boosts demand not only for qualified crew but also for deckhands, cooks, cleaners and general companions.

While every effort has been made to ensure the information contained in this book is accurate, schedules do change, boats break down, services get cancelled and restaurants and hotels go bust. With this in mind, planning your trip should involve plenty of room for flexibility. This book gives comprehensive coverage of the possibilities but you should confirm the realities as close as possible to the time you set off. it's more than likely that everything will go smoothly but be prepared to alter your plans as you go along. Some of the most interesting and adventurous travel experiences come out of a serendipitous change of plans.
