Using this guide

Contents List | Introduction | Planning your trip | Using this guide | Route options | Sample Timetables

The section on planning your trip outlines some suggested routes and costs and gives ideas about when to go, what to take and on booking your trip. Part 2 is an overview of the geography, flora and fauna, and history of the region. Part 3 gives basic information (visas, when to go, where to get information, national holidays etc) on all the countries included in the guide. The next five parts comprise the guide itself, each beginning with some more detailed route plans. We have divided the Mediterranean into five sections (Western Mediterranean, yrrhenian Sea, Adriatic Sea, Aegean Sea and Eastern Mediterranean), each roughly corresponding to one of the Med's interior seas. Details are given about the main ports in each sea, including all you need to know about the place's history, what to see, how to get around (by ferry and overland), practical information, where to stay and where to eat. Only basic ferry details (destinations and local contact details) are given in these parts; full details are in the appendix.

The appendix includes a list of the main ferry companies with their contact details and general route information; details (frequency, duration and sample fares) about most ferry services in the Mediterranean (these are shown graphically in the route maps at the start of each section); and, finally, some useful phrases.
