Laura Stone began her cycling career in Cambridge, which is as flat as a puncture patch, by speeding to Classics lectures on a £5 bike. She then graduated to the hillier polders of Holland, where she updated the Rough Guide to the Netherlands. After a collision with a bus on Putney Bridge in London she got back on her bike by booking a one-way ticket to the Indian Himalayas where she pedalled around very happily for five (accident-free) months, enough to qualify her to update the mountain chapters of the Rough Guide to India.
